The conventional arc flash protection system gives a trip command to the circuit breaker to disconnect the fault. The arc flash burning time is as long as the operation time is for the arc flash protection system (7ms) and circuit breaker (40 ... 70 ms). The total fault disconnection time is depending very much on the operation of the circuit breaker.
The fault distinguishing can be done faster when using arc eliminator units together with the VAMP 221 arc flash protection system. The arc eliminator unit type VAM 3ED controlled by the arc flash protection system type VAMP 221 can further degrease the burning time of the fault by earthing every phase to the ground within five milliseconds. After triggering the arc eliminator the fault is converted to metal-galvanic thus reducing the pressure impact to minimum.
The VAM 1T interface unit is connected to the VAMP 221 arc flash protection system via modular cables. The trip command and supervision communication is done optically between VAM 1T and the VAM 3TD triggering unit which is the energy storage for the VAM 3ED eliminator unit.
